The Pensacola Pelicans (4-11) dropped a tough one 4-2 to the El Paso Diablos (8-6) in game two of the three game set. With the theme tonight being Tuesday Madness, things did get a little crazy. With the Pelicans down a run going into the bottom half of the sixth, the lights in the stadium went out. After experiencing an 18 minute power outage delay, the game resumed only to leave the Pelicans in the dark as the offense could not put things together, leaving ten men on base.
El Paso scored first with one run in the second inning. Matt Kent led off the inning with a single and quickly moved to second when Bryon Smith grounded out to Jack Joffrion at second base. Alex Derhak then drove in Kent with a single to right-center.
Pensacola tied the game in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Chris Reynolds lined a fastball into right field to score Josh Morgan who walked.
El Paso all-star Stantrel Smith gave the Diablos the lead with a solo-shot over the left-center field fence to lead off the top of the third inning.
The Pelicans tied the game at two in the fourth inning. Brandon Sing walked and made his way to home plate on a two-out double from Pelicans catcher Dylan Parzyk, his third of the season.
With the game knotted at two, the Diablo’s Bryon Smith lead off the top of the sixth with a solo homerun to right to break up the stalemate and make it 3-2 Diablos.
Dan Smith pitched an outstanding game, despite getting the hard luck loss. In 7.2 innings, he gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out nine.
The Diablos tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth on two hits and a throwing error by Pelican’s shortstop Dallas Christison to make it a final of 4-2 Diablos.
Dane DeValk will take the mound in the rubber match tomorrow as the same two teams square off in the third and final game of the series at 6:35 p.m. at Pelican Park.
